CPD Courses for British Mountain Guides and members of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors:

Further training in Avalanche Awareness

Chris was a Mountaineering Instructor (MIC) and always had aspirations to become a British Mountain Guide, the most prestigious mountaineering qualification.

After much discussion, the Trustees decided that an appropriate way to support the continuing professional development of Guides and Mountaineering Instructors is to provide funding to run a series of cutting edge avalanche awareness courses in Scotland each winter.

In January 2012 Mark Diggins ran the first of these courses entitled: Avalanche Hazard Evaluation considerations for a Scottish snowpack. Since then we have helped over 300 professional mountaineers gain important training towards avalanche awareness, from the Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS). These include trainee WML up to Full BMG members. Pictures and reports from these courses can be found on the CWMT Facebook and Twitter.

These are one day courses for up to eight people, run by Sportscotland Avalanche Information Service, which count as CPD and offer valuable training to those of you who spend a considerable amount of time in the UK on snow covered terrain in your work as an instructor/guide. The idea is to get the message out via instructors/guides, so that they in turn can educate their own guests in current best practice. Each winter AMI (the Association of Mountaineering Instructors) have kindly sponsored 2 avalanche awareness courses.

This is a great opportunity to share CPD with other UK mountain professionals so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Thanks go to Nevis Range, Glenmore Lodge and Cairngorm Mountain for letting us use their lecture rooms to run the CWMT avalanche courses.

From 2018, we have encouraged people participating in the avalanche training days to make a minimum donation of £10 to the Chris Walker Trust. Please make this payment via the CWMT Donate page and let Alan know.

Any leaders with a WML award upwards, who are interested in getting a place on next winter’s training, should contact Alan Kimber on info@alankimber-mountaineering.co.uk or 07909 905 664.  Priority will be given to people who have not attended these courses recently.

Anyone wishing to assist in raising funds for the Chris Walker Memorial Trust should contact Alan Kimber directly.
